World Record Golf 2008 - The Results...
173 golfers took part in the event on a very wet and windy day, Sunday 22nd June.
A team of young golfers from Helensburgh Golf Club just missed setting the record for the fastest 4-ball, completing a round of 6005 yards in
1 hr, 5 mins 49 secs, 1 minute 24 seconds outside the record. Another group of boys from Troon missed by 3 min 41 secs. Both remarkable times, considering the conditions and difficulty of the course.
The 100yard drive record stalled at 26 drives, which the organisers assured us is about the norm once the nerves kick in.
We won’t mention the rotarian who fell short, but we will remind him at every opportunity, and we have the photograph as evidence.
This and the fastest Hole record had to be abandoned as the weather deteriorated during the afternoon.
The first golfers teed off at 07:30, in torrential rail and very high winds. Teams due to arrive by boat from Campbletown had to cancel due to the storm.
The last team holed out just after 10 p.m., almost in darkness and with no crowd to welcome them in…..
Despite the weather, everyone who took part enjoyed the event.
District Governor Drew Hughes said -
"This event has raised the profile of Rotary and the "End Polio Now" campaign in the public domain throughout Scotland, and made a major contribution to the Gates Foundation challenge".
